Dwarf Oleander
Nerium oleander
Dwarf Oleander shrub with narrow green leaves and coral-pink flower clusters

Overview
Dwarf oleander is a compact nonnative evergreen shrub with narrow leaves and abundant warm-season flowers. It handles heat, sun, salt, and drought better than many flowering shrubs.
Mature Size
Dwarf cultivars usually reach 3 to 6 feet tall and wide. Standard oleanders grow much larger, so cultivar verification is essential.
Light and Water
Full sun produces the strongest flowering. Water during establishment, then irrigate only during extended drought.
Soil and Drainage
Oleander adapts to sandy and alkaline soils when drainage is good. Avoid chronically wet beds.
Care
Prune after a flowering cycle to manage size. Wear gloves and sanitize tools. Monitor for oleander caterpillars and scale.
Landscape Uses
Use as a flowering screen, coastal hedge, roadway planting, or heat-tolerant accent. Keep it away from play areas and pet spaces.
Best Planting Time
Spring through early fall supports rapid establishment.
Critical Safety Concern
Every part of oleander is highly toxic when eaten. Smoke from burning branches is also dangerous. Never compost or burn trimmings where exposure may occur.
