Eastern Blue Star

Amsonia tabernaemontana

Eastern Blue Star perennial with narrow leaves and pale blue star-shaped flowers

Overview

Eastern blue star is a clump-forming Florida native perennial with narrow foliage and clusters of pale blue star-shaped spring flowers.

Mature Size and Habit

Plants usually reach 2 to 3 feet tall and wide. Multiple upright stems form a rounded clump that expands slowly.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it in borders, foundation beds, rain-garden shoulders, pollinator plantings, or as a repeated accent.

Sunlight

Full sun produces the strongest form. Partial sun helps in hot Tampa exposures. Deep shade causes weak growth.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Use moist, well-drained soil during establishment. Mature plants tolerate some drought. Avoid prolonged waterlogging and reflected-heat sites.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through early spring gives roots time to establish before summer heat.

Pruning and Maintenance

Trim stems after flowering when a compact form is preferred. Cut dormant growth near the ground before spring emergence.

Wildlife Value

Flowers support bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and hummingbird moths.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

It handles Central Florida heat with adequate soil moisture. Winter dormancy or thinning is normal.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Broken stems release milky sap that may irritate skin. Plant parts should not be eaten. Wear gloves during pruning.

Invasive Concerns

It is native to Florida and is not an invasive concern. Clumps expand slowly.
