Flatwoods Plum

Prunus umbellata

Flatwoods Plum (Prunus umbellata), a Florida native plant installed in a Tampa landscape

Overview

A Florida-native small tree with clouds of white spring flowers, dark edible-looking but wildlife-oriented fruit, and a rounded crown suited to naturalistic home landscapes.

Mature Size and Habit

It usually matures 12 to 20 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide, sometimes larger on favorable sites. The form is often multi-trunked and irregular.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a flowering specimen, woodland-edge tree, wildlife planting, or small native canopy feature. Place it where spring bloom and fruit are visible.

Sunlight

Full sun gives the best flowering and fruiting, while partial sun is tolerated. Dense shade produces sparse growth and fewer blooms.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Flatwoods plum prefers acidic, well-drained sandy soil and becomes drought tolerant after establishment. Avoid saturated sites and constant shallow irrigation.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Plant from fall through early spring so roots establish before summer heat. Maintain even moisture during the first year and protect the trunk from equipment.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune after flowering to remove crossing branches, guide trunk structure, and preserve its natural rounded outline. Remove suckers if a cleaner tree form is desired.

Wildlife Value

Spring flowers support bees and other pollinators, while the fruit feeds birds and mammals. Branching also provides nesting cover.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

It is well adapted to Tampa heat, humidity, seasonal drought, and ordinary winter cold. Late frost can reduce flowers but rarely harms established wood.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Plants in the Prunus genus contain compounds in leaves and seeds that should not be eaten by people or pets. Allow clearance for fruit drop and minor suckering.

Invasive Concerns

Flatwoods plum is Florida native and not invasive. Occasional seedlings or suckers are easily managed during routine maintenance.
