Florida Anise

Overview

Florida anise is a native evergreen shrub with glossy aromatic leaves and unusual deep red flowers. It develops into a dense plant commonly reaching 6 to 10 feet tall and wide, creating dependable structure in shaded landscapes.

Where to Use It

Use it as a shaded privacy screen, woodland border, foundation backdrop, or specimen near patios where the aromatic foliage is easy to appreciate. It pairs well with ferns, coontie, and other shade-tolerant natives.

Light, Soil, and Water

Plant in partial or full shade. Florida anise prefers moist, acidic, organic soil and protection from harsh afternoon sun. Water during establishment and during extended drought. A broad mulch layer helps maintain even moisture.

Best Time to Plant and Care

Fall through early spring is the best planting period. Prune selectively after flowering or in late winter. Avoid repeated shearing because the natural branching and flowers provide much of the plant's value.

Important Considerations
