Formosa Lavender Azalea

Rhododendron indicum 'Formosa'

Formosa Lavender Azalea identification and South Tampa landscape use

Overview

Formosa Lavender Azalea is a large evergreen flowering shrub known for a heavy spring display of lavender-purple blooms. Its broad form and strong seasonal color make it a classic choice for shaded Southern landscapes.

Mature Size and Habit

It commonly grows 6 to 8 feet tall and wide with a rounded, branching habit. Older plants can become larger when left unpruned, so provide enough space for natural growth.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it in foundation beds, shaded borders, woodland-style plantings, informal hedges, or as a flowering accent. Position it where mature growth will not block windows or crowd walkways.

Sunlight

Partial sun or high filtered shade supports flowering while limiting heat stress. Morning sun with afternoon shade works well in Tampa. Dense shade reduces flowering.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in acidic, organic, well-drained soil. Maintain even moisture during establishment and avoid alkaline fill, standing water, and repeated irrigation against the foliage.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through early spring provides the strongest establishment period. Cooler weather reduces transplant stress and lets roots develop before summer heat.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune soon after flowering so next season's buds remain intact. Use selective cuts instead of severe shearing. Maintain mulch and monitor for lace bugs in stressed or overly sunny locations.

Wildlife Value

Spring flowers provide nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The dense evergreen branches also offer limited shelter for small birds.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Established plants tolerate normal Tampa winters, though late cold can damage open flowers. Afternoon shade and consistent soil moisture reduce summer heat stress.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Azalea leaves and flowers are toxic if eaten and pose a concern for pets and children. Wear gloves if sensitive skin reacts during pruning.

Invasive Concerns

Formosa Lavender Azalea is not native to Florida and is not generally considered invasive in maintained landscapes. Remove occasional seedlings if they appear outside the intended bed.
