Kaleidoscope Abelia

Abelia × grandiflora 'Kaleidoscope'

Kaleidoscope Abelia with gold and green variegated foliage in a South Tampa landscape

Overview

Kaleidoscope Abelia is a compact evergreen shrub prized for gold-edged green leaves, coral-red new growth, and small pale flowers. Its changing foliage gives South Tampa landscapes dependable color without relying on a short bloom cycle.

Mature Size and Habit

It normally forms a dense rounded mound about 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. Selective pruning preserves its layered natural shape better than repeated hard shearing.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it along foundations, at walkway corners, in mixed borders, or as a bright mass beneath taller palms and small trees. Give each plant enough room to keep foliage off walls and neighboring shrubs.

Sunlight

Full sun produces the strongest gold and red coloration. Light afternoon shade also works well, especially beside reflective walls where intense summer heat can scorch fresh growth.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in well-drained amended soil with the root flare at grade. Water deeply during establishment, then allow the upper soil to begin drying before the next irrigation.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through early spring provides mild establishment weather in Tampa. Warm-season planting also works when irrigation is dependable and the root zone is checked frequently.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove crossing or damaged stems and trim lightly after a growth flush. Monitor for aphids, scale, leaf spots, and root stress caused by compacted or saturated soil.

Wildlife Value

The small tubular flowers provide nectar for bees and butterflies. Pair it with Florida-native flowering plants when stronger habitat value is a project goal.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Established plants handle Tampa heat well. Hard freezes can burn outer foliage, while prolonged wet soil and extreme reflected heat cause thinning or dieback.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

This shrub has no prominent thorn or aggressive-root concern. Keep mature spread clear of sidewalks, air-conditioning equipment, windows, and irrigation heads.

Invasive Concerns

Kaleidoscope Abelia is nonnative and is not generally treated as invasive in Florida landscapes. Remove unwanted seedlings and dispose of pruned material responsibly.
