Little Gem Magnolia

Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem'

Little Gem Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem') installed in a South Tampa landscape

Overview

A compact cultivar of the native Southern magnolia with glossy evergreen leaves, rusty-brown undersides, and fragrant white flowers on a narrower tree.

Mature Size and Habit

It commonly matures 15 to 25 feet tall and 8 to 12 feet wide with a dense upright form. Growth is slower and more compact than standard Southern magnolia.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a small specimen tree, privacy screen, corner anchor, espalier, or formal evergreen feature. Its narrow habit fits many residential lots.

Sunlight

Full sun to partial sun is suitable. Strong light supports dense foliage and generous flowering, while protection from extreme reflected heat helps young trees.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in moist, acidic, well-drained soil. Water deeply during establishment and extended drought, then maintain mulch over the root zone without touching the trunk.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through early spring is the preferred Tampa planting window. Cooler weather reduces stress and allows roots to expand before summer.

Pruning and Maintenance

Minimal pruning is best. Remove damaged limbs, guide a strong leader, and prune after flowering only when clearance or structure requires it.

Wildlife Value

Fragrant flowers attract beetles and other pollinators, while seeds feed birds and small wildlife. Dense evergreen foliage supplies year-round cover.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

The tree handles Tampa heat, humidity, and ordinary winter cold. Drought stress can cause leaf drop, and newly planted trees need consistent moisture.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Allow room for surface roots and falling leaves, flowers, and seed pods. Keep the trunk and root flare away from pavement, foundations, and utility lines.

Invasive Concerns

Little Gem is a cultivar of a Florida-native species and is not invasive. Occasional seedlings are uncommon and easy to manage.
