Overview

Magnificent Croton (Codiaeum variegatum 'Magnificent') is a tropical evergreen grown for broad leaves splashed with green, yellow, orange, red, and burgundy, giving Tampa beds lasting color without seasonal flowers.

Mature Size and Habit

It forms a dense upright shrub about 4 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide; light tip pruning keeps older plants compact and full

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a bold accent, tropical foundation plant, poolside feature, or large container specimen with room away from busy paths

Sunlight

Full sun creates the strongest color with steady moisture; partial sun also works, while deep shade produces greener leaves and weaker stems

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil and water evenly during establishment; prolonged saturation or drought causes leaf drop and decline

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through early spring gives Magnificent Croton mild establishment weather in Tampa; warm-season planting also works with dependable irrigation and close monitoring.

Pruning and Maintenance

Tip-prune during warm growth, remove freeze damage after recovery begins, and monitor for scale, mealybugs, mites, and nutrient stress

Wildlife Value

The small flowers offer limited pollinator value, while dense foliage provides minor shelter; add native flowering companions for stronger habitat

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Heat and humidity suit croton, but freezes cause leaf drop and stem injury; use a warm, wind-protected microclimate in colder inland areas

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Milky sap irritates skin and eyes, and plant parts are harmful if eaten; use gloves and keep it away from pets, play areas, and tight walks

Invasive Concerns

This nonnative species is not generally listed as invasive in Florida; monitor for volunteers and dispose of prunings away from natural areas
