Pink Muhly Grass

Overview

Pink muhly grass is a Florida native ornamental grass valued for fine green foliage and clouds of pink-purple flowers in fall. The foliage usually forms a 2 to 3-foot mound, while flower stalks rise higher and create strong seasonal impact.

Where to Use It

Use muhly grass in sweeping masses, driveway borders, modern landscapes, sunny rain-garden edges, and mixed native beds. Repetition creates the strongest effect. Leave open space around each clump so the foliage and flower plumes remain visible.

Light, Soil, and Water

Full sun produces the best flowering and compact growth. It performs in sandy, well-drained soil and tolerates drought after establishment. Avoid permanently wet locations and heavy shade. Water new plants deeply, then allow the upper soil to begin drying between irrigation cycles.

Planting and Care

Plant in spring or early fall. Cut old foliage back to 6 to 12 inches in late winter before new growth begins. Do not shear during fall flowering. Divide crowded clumps during late winter or spring.

Important Considerations
