Purple Fountain Grass
Cenchrus setaceus 'Rubrum'
Purple Fountain Grass with burgundy arching leaves and rose-purple flower plumes

Overview
Purple fountain grass is a nonnative ornamental grass grown for burgundy foliage and soft rose-purple plumes. It adds movement and strong color to sunny Tampa beds.
Mature Size
Clumps commonly reach 3 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide.
Light and Water
Full sun develops the darkest foliage. Water during establishment, then irrigate during extended drought.
Soil and Drainage
Use well-drained soil. The plant tolerates sandy sites but declines in standing water.
Care
Cut old foliage back near the end of winter before fresh growth begins. Wear gloves because leaf edges may be rough.
Landscape Uses
Use as a specimen, repeating border accent, container plant, or contrast against green shrubs.
Best Planting Time
Spring through early fall supports fast establishment.
Selection Note
Choose the named purple cultivar Rubrum. Avoid green fountain grass forms, which present greater invasive risk in warm climates.
