Pygmy Date Palm

Overview

Pygmy date palm is a compact Southeast Asian palm with fine arching fronds and a mature height near 6 to 12 feet. Nurseries often sell several plants together to create a multi-trunk appearance.

Where to Use It

Use it near entries, in courtyards, beside pools, or as a small tropical accent. Keep it away from narrow walkways, doors, and seating areas because sharp spines occur near the base of the fronds.

Light, Soil, and Water

Plant in sun or partial shade and well-drained soil. Partial shade often keeps foliage greener in Tampa. Water regularly during establishment and during dry periods. Maintain a proper Florida palm nutrition program where permitted.

Best Time to Plant and Care

Spring through early summer is the best planting window. Plant at the original depth and never bury the trunk. Remove only dead fronds. Wear eye and hand protection when pruning because the lower leaf spines are dangerous.

Important Considerations
