Overview
Radicans Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides 'Radicans') is a non-native shrub suited to Tampa landscapes.
Mature Size and Habit
Expect about 1 to 2 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, forming a low spreading evergreen mound with small glossy leaves and highly fragrant white double flowers. Growth is slow.
Best Landscape Uses
Place it near an entry, patio, or walkway where fragrance can be enjoyed, while preserving airflow on every side. Its spreading habit also works along low foundations and at the front of layered beds.
Sunlight
Morning sun with afternoon shade is dependable in Tampa. Full sun increases flowering when moisture is steady, but reflected heat and hot western exposures can scorch foliage and dry buds.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Gardenias need rich, acidic, well-drained soil around pH 5.0 to 6.5. Alkaline fill, shell, and concrete runoff cause iron chlorosis; saturated soil encourages root disease. Keep irrigation off open flowers when practical.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
October through early spring offers easy establishment. Summer planting requires reliable drainage and frequent root-ball checks.
Pruning and Maintenance
Prune after flowering and before fall bud development. Monitor whiteflies, scales, aphids, mealybugs, sooty mold, and root-knot nematodes, and correct soil or irrigation problems before relying on repeated fertilizer applications.
Wildlife Value
Fragrant flowers attract bees and other pollinators. Double blooms offer less accessible pollen than simple flowers, so use this gardenia as one part of a broader pollinator planting rather than the only resource.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Established plants handle Tampa winters, but tender new growth and flower buds can be damaged by freezes. Summer heat is manageable with afternoon protection, mulch, and consistent moisture in a well-aerated root zone.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Gardenia fruit and plant material can cause stomach upset in pets if eaten, so place it away from animals that chew plants. The shrub has no thorns and a generally manageable root system.
Invasive Concerns
Gardenia jasminoides is non-native. UF/IFAS currently considers it not a problem species in Central Florida, including Hillsborough County, but trimmings should still remain out of natural areas.
