Sapphire Showers Duranta

Duranta erecta 'Sapphire Showers'

Sapphire Showers duranta with violet-blue white-edged flowers and golden berries

Overview

Sapphire Showers duranta is a showy subtropical shrub selected for cascading violet-blue flowers edged in crisp white.

Mature Size and Habit

Unpruned plants develop rapidly into a broad shrub or small tree about 8 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a flowering specimen, informal hedge, pollinator accent, or large container plant.

Sunlight

Full sun produces the heaviest bloom and the tightest growth.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Choose fertile, well-drained soil and irrigate consistently while roots establish. Mature plants tolerate short dry periods, but flowering improves with deep irrigation during extended drought. Avoid saturated ground, salty runoff, and repeated shallow watering.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Plant from late winter through spring after severe cold risk declines. Early fall also works in coastal Tampa when warm soil supports rooting, but inland Central Florida plants need enough establishment time before a possible freeze.

Pruning and Maintenance

Thin crossing branches and shorten long shoots after a bloom cycle rather than shearing constantly. Wear gloves, sanitize tools, remove suckers, and monitor tender growth for whiteflies, scale, caterpillars, and cold injury.

Wildlife Value

Flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators through much of the warm season.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

This cultivar thrives in Florida heat and humidity and is suited to zones 9B through 11.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Golden berries and foliage are toxic if eaten, particularly to children and pets, and some stems bear sharp thorns. Site the shrub away from doors and walks, collect fallen fruit, and allow space for the vigorous crown and roots.

Invasive Concerns

Duranta is nonnative and has escaped cultivation in warm climates. UF/IFAS identifies golden dewdrop as an invasive plant concern, so remove fruit, pull seedlings promptly, control discarded cuttings, and never plant it beside natural areas or waterways.
