Shishi Gashira Camellia
Camellia sasanqua 'Shishi Gashira' (also classified as Camellia hiemalis)
Shishi Gashira camellia with rose pink flowers, yellow stamens, and glossy dark green leaves

Overview
Shishi Gashira is a compact camellia with rose-pink flowers and glossy evergreen leaves. It flowers in fall and early winter, bringing color when many warm-season landscape plants have finished their main display.
Mature Size and Habit
LSU landscape trials describe a slow-growing shrub around 4 to 5 feet tall and wide. Older plants and favorable sites produce variation. Allow space for its natural branching rather than planning a narrow sheared hedge.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it beneath high tree canopies, near a shaded terrace, or in mixed foundation beds. Several spaced plants create a soft flowering group. Place the blooms where you will see them during cooler months.
Sunlight
Morning sun with afternoon shade suits many Central Florida sites. Avoid intense reflected heat beside west-facing walls. More exposed planting requires especially careful irrigation during establishment.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Camellias prefer acidic, well-drained soil. Water regularly through the establishment period and avoid low spots which stay wet. Improve the whole planting bed when soil preparation is needed, then mulch without burying the stem base.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Fall and winter are useful installation periods. Check drainage before planting and monitor root-ball moisture during dry weather. Select a sheltered bed with access for ongoing care.
Pruning and Maintenance
Prune selectively after flowering to preserve the next season's buds. Remove crossing or damaged branches and retain the natural form. Inspect leaves for scale and follow fertilizer directions rather than increasing rates to force growth.
Wildlife Value
Flowers with exposed stamens offer feeding opportunities for bees. The evergreen branching provides cover within a mixed garden. Add native plants nearby for broader habitat value.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Heat, drying roots, and alkaline soil are practical concerns in Tampa gardens. Choose a protected site and avoid assuming all camellias suit every Florida location. An established root system improves tolerance of dry periods.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Keep irrigation trenches and edging work outside the established root zone. Leave access to walls, utilities, and windows as the shrub fills out. This ornamental is not a substitute for the tea plant, Camellia sinensis.
Invasive Concerns
Shishi Gashira is a cultivated Asian camellia selection rather than a Florida native. Use it in managed garden beds and choose native species for restoration plantings.
