Silver Saw Palmetto
Serenoa repens
Silver saw palmetto with blue-silver fan leaves in a sunny Florida native landscape

Overview
Silver Saw Palmetto is the blue-silver foliage form of Serenoa repens, one of Florida's signature native palms.
Mature Size and Habit
Most landscape plants reach about 3 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 10 feet wide over time.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it as a specimen, native-garden anchor, coastal accent, broad mass, or wildlife planting.
Sunlight
Full sun develops the strongest silver color and densest form. Partial sun is tolerated, though plants may appear greener and more open. Avoid deep shade for specimens intended to display vivid blue foliage.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Saw palmetto adapts to Florida sand and other well-drained soils. Water deeply during establishment; mature plants are highly drought tolerant and require little supplemental irrigation. Do not keep newly planted root balls saturated.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Spring through early summer is useful for warm-soil rooting, while fall planting can also succeed with consistent moisture.
Pruning and Maintenance
Remove only fully brown or damaged fronds, cutting near the base without injuring live trunks or the growing points. Do not hurricane-cut. Fallen fruit and old flower stalks may be removed where tidiness is important.
Wildlife Value
Flowers attract numerous insects, fruits feed birds and mammals, and dense foliage creates valuable shelter.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
This native palm tolerates Tampa heat, drought, wind, and ordinary freezes. Newly installed plants are less resilient until rooted. Silver foliage can show cosmetic spotting after stress but normally recovers under suitable conditions.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Leaf stalks bear sharp sawlike teeth that can cut skin and snag clothing. Keep plants well away from walkways, play zones, pools, and maintenance access. Roots are fibrous and generally nonaggressive, but mature clumps are difficult to remove.
Invasive Concerns
Serenoa repens is native to Florida and is not invasive.
