Southern Shield Fern
Thelypteris kunthii
Southern Shield Fern with upright arching light-green divided fronds

Overview
Southern shield fern is a Florida native fern with upright arching fronds and a lush woodland appearance. It performs well in shaded Tampa gardens when soil moisture stays dependable.
Mature Size
Mature clumps reach about 2 to 4 feet tall and wide. Underground rhizomes allow the plant to spread into colonies.
Light and Water
Plant in partial shade or filtered shade. Morning sun is acceptable with adequate moisture. Water regularly during drought.
Soil and Drainage
Moist, organic soil supports the best growth. Drainage should remain adequate even though the plant tolerates wetter conditions than many ornamentals.
Care
Remove brown fronds at the base near the end of winter. Thin spreading rhizomes when plants move beyond the intended bed.
Landscape Uses
Use beneath oaks, beside shaded walks, in rain gardens, or as a massed native ground layer.
Best Planting Time
Fall through spring is ideal. Mulch lightly to preserve moisture without burying the crown.
Tampa Notes
Fronds may brown during freezes or drought, but healthy rhizomes usually produce fresh growth.
