Tropical Sage
Salvia coccinea
Tropical Sage plant with green leaves and upright spikes of bright red flowers

Overview
Tropical sage is a Florida native flowering plant with upright spikes of red, pink, or white tubular blooms. It flowers for long periods and fits naturally into Tampa pollinator gardens.
Mature Size
Plants normally reach 1 to 3 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide. They often reseed and form informal groups.
Light and Water
Full sun creates compact growth and abundant flowers. Partial shade works with fewer blooms. Water during establishment, then allow brief dry periods.
Soil and Drainage
Well-drained sandy or loamy soil is best. Constantly wet soil shortens plant life.
Care
Cut back tired stems to encourage fresh growth. Leave some seed heads if natural reseeding is desired. Avoid heavy fertilizer.
Landscape Uses
Use in pollinator beds, native borders, cottage gardens, or mass plantings. Place several together for a stronger display.
Best Planting Time
Fall, late winter, and spring are excellent. Summer planting needs close watering during establishment.
Wildlife Value
Flowers attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and native bees.
