Variegated Pittosporum
Pittosporum tobira 'Variegata'
Variegated Pittosporum (Pittosporum tobira 'Variegata') installed in a South Tampa landscape

Overview
A popular evergreen shrub with creamy white and gray-green leaves, rounded growth, and fragrant spring flowers that brighten shaded or mixed South Tampa planting beds.
Mature Size and Habit
It can mature near 8 to 10 feet tall and wide when left unpruned. Most landscapes maintain it between 3 and 6 feet as a rounded hedge or foundation shrub.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it for hedges, foundation planting, screens, mixed borders, poolside beds, and large containers. The light foliage creates contrast beside darker tropical plants.
Sunlight
Full sun to partial shade is suitable. Afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch in reflected heat, while too much shade reduces density and variegation.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Provide well-drained soil and moderate irrigation during establishment. Established shrubs tolerate short dry periods but decline in constantly wet or poorly drained beds.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Fall through spring offers comfortable establishment weather in Tampa. Warm-season planting also succeeds with dependable irrigation and careful monitoring.
Pruning and Maintenance
Selective pruning after spring flowering preserves the natural rounded form and fragrance. Frequent shearing creates dense outer foliage and increases labor.
Wildlife Value
Fragrant flowers serve bees and other pollinators. Dense evergreen branching gives small birds temporary cover, though the plant offers limited native habitat value.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
It handles ordinary Tampa heat and brief cold weather. Protect new plants from hard freezes, salt spray, and extreme reflected afternoon heat.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Roots are normally manageable in landscape beds. Keep the mature shrub clear of walkways and allow air movement to reduce leaf and disease problems.
Invasive Concerns
UF/IFAS currently does not consider Pittosporum tobira a problem species. Remove occasional seedlings and prevent unwanted spread outside maintained beds.
