Weeping Bottlebrush

Melaleuca viminalis

Weeping Bottlebrush tree with narrow leaves and bright red cylindrical flowers

Overview

Weeping bottlebrush is a nonnative small tree with graceful branches and bright red cylindrical flowers. Its long bloom season gives sunny Tampa landscapes dependable color.

Mature Size

Expect about 15 to 25 feet tall and 10 to 20 feet wide. Multi-trunk and single-trunk forms are both common.

Light and Water

Plant in full sun. Water deeply during establishment. Mature trees tolerate drought better than constantly wet soil.

Soil and Drainage

Use well-drained sandy or loamy soil. Avoid low areas that stay saturated after summer storms.

Care

Structural pruning during the early years helps prevent weak branch unions. Remove dead wood and low branches as needed without topping the canopy.

Landscape Uses

Use as a flowering specimen, small lawn tree, or colorful focal point. Keep adequate clearance from roofs and narrow walks.

Best Planting Time

Fall through spring is ideal. Summer planting requires reliable irrigation.

Wildlife Value

Red flowers attract hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators.
