West Indian Mahogany
Swietenia mahagoni
West Indian Mahogany (Swietenia mahagoni), a Florida native plant installed in a Tampa landscape

Overview
A stately South Florida-native shade tree with glossy compound leaves, a rounded crown, and handsome reddish-brown bark suited to warm protected Tampa sites.
Mature Size and Habit
Mature trees often reach 40 to 60 feet tall and 30 to 50 feet wide. The broad canopy and heavy branching require a generous open planting area.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it as a major specimen or shade tree on large properties, commercial grounds, and protected coastal landscapes. It should never be squeezed into a narrow strip.
Sunlight
Full sun creates the strongest trunk and fullest crown. Light partial sun is tolerated when young, but long-term overhead shade is unsuitable.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
It prefers well-drained limestone, sand, or loam and tolerates drought after establishment. Deep watering during the first year supports anchoring roots.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Plant in spring or early summer after cold risk passes, giving roots a full warm season to establish. Maintain a clean root flare and wide mulch ring.
Pruning and Maintenance
Structural pruning is essential while young to select well-spaced branches and limit included bark. Large-tree maintenance belongs with an experienced arborist.
Wildlife Value
The broad canopy offers nesting and shelter, and flowers serve small pollinators. Seed capsules add seasonal interest but also create litter.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Heat, humidity, wind, and salt exposure are tolerated, but young trees are sensitive to hard freezes. Choose a protected South Tampa microclimate.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Large roots and limbs require substantial setback from buildings, pavement, utilities, and pools. Seed pods are heavy, and mature trees need storm inspection.
Invasive Concerns
West Indian mahogany is native to extreme southern Florida and is not classified as invasive. Seedlings can appear below fruiting trees and are easily managed.
