Overview

Bougainvillea is a tropical South American vine or sprawling shrub known for brilliant papery bracts surrounding small flowers. It blooms heaviest during bright, relatively dry periods.

Mature Size and Growth

Depending on cultivar and support, plants grow 10 to 30 feet or more. Dwarf forms stay smaller. Long thorny canes need training and selective pruning.

Where to Use It

Use on strong trellises, masonry walls, pergolas, large containers, or as a dramatic free-standing specimen. Keep it away from narrow walks, play areas, and routine service access.

Light, Soil, and Water

Full sun and excellent drainage are essential. Water deeply during establishment, then let soil dry somewhat between cycles. Excess water and nitrogen produce leafy growth with fewer bracts.

Best Time to Plant and Care

Plant in spring after cold risk passes. Disturb the root ball as little as possible. Prune after a flowering cycle and wear heavy gloves when handling thorny stems.

Wildlife and Landscape Value

Bracts provide strong seasonal color and flowers attract some insects. Dense thorny growth also provides shelter, though it has limited native habitat value.

Important Considerations

Bougainvillea is not native to Florida and is sensitive to freezes. Thorns cause injury, roots dislike disturbance, and vigorous stems damage weak supports. Learn more from UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
