Overview

Brasil is a variegated heartleaf philodendron with green leaves marked by irregular lime-yellow center stripes. Its trailing stems add color to sheltered Florida patios.

Mature Size and Habit

Stems climb or cascade and readily extend several feet. Allow about 3–6 feet for a managed display, with pruning as needed. Supported vines eventually grow longer.

Best Landscape Uses

Choose hanging baskets, raised patio pots, or a contained climbing support. In Central Florida, use a movable container instead of relying on an exposed landscape bed.

Sunlight

Bright indirect light helps show the variegation. Gentle morning light is suitable after acclimation. Avoid harsh afternoon sun, which scorches tender leaves.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Use a well-drained organic mix and keep it lightly moist during active growth. Reduce irrigation in cool weather and empty saucers. Soggy conditions encourage root rot.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Spring is a practical time to repot and begin outdoor displays after cold fronts ease. Place new plants under cover and check moisture frequently during establishment.

Pruning and Maintenance

Pinch or shorten vines to maintain a full shape. Remove damaged foliage, examine new growth for pests, and keep stems away from nearby structures.

Wildlife Value

Flowers are rarely seen in cultivation. Treat it as an ornamental foliage plant with limited dependable wildlife food value, and add suitable native plants for wildlife.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

This tropical vine needs warmth and protection from frost. Bring containers indoors before cold weather. Avoid drying air-conditioning drafts and hot reflected light.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

All parts contain irritating calcium oxalate crystals. Keep away from children and pets, wear gloves for pruning, and prevent aerial roots from attaching to walls.

Invasive Concerns

The species originates in tropical America, not Florida. Keep this cultivated selection contained and collect every cutting so stems do not root beyond the intended display.
