Overview
Burle Marx is a cultivated philodendron with glossy, elongated heart-shaped leaves. It is distinct from the species Philodendron burle-marxii, a frequent nursery naming error.
Mature Size and Habit
Without support it forms a dense spreading mound. Reserve about 2–4 feet vertically and 3–6 feet across as a maintained planting. Supported stems climb using aerial roots.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it in a sheltered tropical border, grouped foliage bed, or large patio pot. Avoid a location where stems would climb buildings or overwhelm smaller plants.
Sunlight
Bright filtered shade or gentle morning sun suits new Tampa installations. Acclimate foliage carefully before increasing light, and avoid abrupt exposure to afternoon heat.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Provide porous, organic-rich soil with good drainage. Water during establishment, then adjust to rainfall and surface drying. Do not keep the root zone continuously saturated.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Spring through early summer gives tender growth a warm establishment period. In colder Central Florida sites, choose movable containers rather than exposed beds.
Pruning and Maintenance
Remove damaged leaves and redirect spreading stems. Thin crowded growth for access and airflow. Inspect for sucking and chewing insects and use clean pruning tools.
Wildlife Value
Extrafloral glands attract ants, but this foliage plant is not a substitute for native nectar or host plants. Do not promise ornamental flowers or dependable bird fruit.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Protect it from frost and cold drafts. A warm, sheltered microclimate reduces exposure, while containers allow relocation during winter cold.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Calcium oxalate crystals irritate mouths and skin. Keep it away from chewing pets and children, wear gloves when pruning, and prevent aerial roots from attaching to finished surfaces.
Invasive Concerns
This is a nonnative cultivated plant. Monitor spreading stems, keep it out of natural areas, and collect cuttings rather than dumping them beyond the garden.
