Overview

Calidora alocasia is an evergreen tropical hybrid with enormous upright leaves and an architectural silhouette. Its name is Alocasia 'Calidora'. It is not native to Florida.

Mature Size and Habit

A mature clump reaches about 5 to 9 feet tall with a broad, vase-shaped spread. Thick leaf stalks rise from a compact base, so allow generous overhead and side clearance.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it near a shaded entry, beside a screened lanai, in a protected pool garden, or in a large container. Set it back from walks, doors, windows, and service areas.

Sunlight

Give it bright filtered light, partial sun, or high open shade. Morning sun is suitable with moisture, while harsh afternoon exposure can scorch the broad leaves.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Use fertile, organic soil that stays evenly moist but drains after rain. Water during establishment and as the surface dries. Standing water encourages root and crown rot.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Plant in spring or early summer after cold weather passes. Early fall is suitable in a protected site with reliable irrigation. Avoid planting just before a cold event.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove yellow, torn, or cold-damaged leaves at the base. Keep mulch off the crown, feed lightly in active growth, and check for mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites.

Wildlife Value

Calidora is mainly a foliage plant. Its small aroid flowers offer little dependable nectar or fruit value, though the large leaves provide temporary cover.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

It handles humid Central Florida summers with steady moisture, but wind can tear the leaves. Frost causes quick damage. Use canopy or wall protection during cold snaps.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

All parts contain insoluble calcium oxalates and are toxic if chewed by people or pets. Sap can irritate skin and eyes. Roots are not woody, but the large clump needs room away from utilities and traffic.

Invasive Concerns

Calidora is not native. Alocasia can persist in warm Gulf Coast settings, so remove offsets and never discard pieces near wetlands, preserves, or drainage corridors.
