Overview
A dense tropical evergreen hedge plant with small thick leaves and a tidy branching habit, widely used for privacy around South Tampa homes and pools.
Mature Size and Habit
It commonly reaches 6 to 12 feet tall and 4 to 8 feet wide when given space. Regular pruning maintains a dense hedge at the desired height.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it for privacy screens, hedges, foundation planting, pool enclosures, and modern tropical beds. Its small leaves create a finer texture than large-leaf pitch apple.
Sunlight
Full sun to partial sun produces dense growth. Strong sun works well when irrigation is adequate, while deep shade creates open branching.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Plant in well-drained sandy soil and water deeply through establishment. Once rooted, it tolerates dry periods and coastal conditions, but constant wet soil causes decline.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Spring through early fall is the best planting season because warm soil promotes fast rooting. Maintain consistent water during the first growing season.
Pruning and Maintenance
Tip-prune young plants to build branching, then maintain the hedge with regular selective or formal cuts. Avoid allowing it to outgrow a narrow bed before major reduction.
Wildlife Value
Dense evergreen foliage provides shelter for birds and small wildlife. Flowering and fruiting are limited in many maintained landscape selections.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Heat, humidity, wind, and moderate coastal exposure are well tolerated. Freezing temperatures can damage foliage and stems, especially on new plants.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Milky sap can irritate skin, and the mature hedge needs clearance from pavement, fences, and service equipment. Wear gloves during heavy pruning.
Invasive Concerns
Small-leaf Clusia is a nonnative landscape plant whose identity is sometimes confused in the nursery trade. Keep it within maintained beds and remove unwanted seedlings or escaped growth.
