Overview
Southern wax myrtle is a fast-growing Florida native evergreen shrub or small tree with aromatic foliage and pale waxy berries on female plants. It adapts to many Florida sites and creates privacy faster than most native screening plants.
Mature Size and Growth
Unpruned plants often reach 15 to 25 feet tall with a broad, irregular canopy. They accept selective pruning as a multi-trunk tree or informal screen. Dwarf forms remain lower, so confirm the cultivar before designing the bed.
Where to Use It
Use wax myrtle for tall privacy screens, natural buffers, rain-garden edges, wildlife areas, and small multi-trunk trees. It works well where a rigid clipped hedge would look too formal.
Light, Soil, and Water
Plant in full sun to partial shade. It accepts dry sand, periodic wetness, salt exposure, and poor soil. Water deeply through establishment, then reduce irrigation. Avoid placing it in a constantly flooded bed.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Fall through early spring is the easiest planting period in Tampa. Selectively thin and shorten branches instead of shearing the surface. Structural pruning helps young plants resist storm damage and keeps multiple trunks balanced.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
Female plants produce berries eaten by birds. Dense branching creates shelter and nesting cover. Its adaptability makes it useful in low-input Florida-friendly landscapes.
Important Considerations
The species is flammable and should be separated from buildings in fire-prone locations. Fast growth means undersized beds lead to repeated pruning. Roots might sucker and form colonies where moisture is available. Learn more from Florida Native Plant Society.
