Overview
Sweet viburnum is a fast-growing Asian evergreen shrub or small tree with large glossy leaves and fragrant white flower clusters. It is widely used for substantial privacy screening across Central Florida.
Mature Size and Growth
Unpruned plants reach 20 to 30 feet tall and 15 to 25 feet wide. Hedges often stay 8 to 15 feet with regular pruning, so installations need a wide bed.
Where to Use It
Use for tall privacy hedges, large property buffers, noise-screening layers, or multi-trunk evergreen trees. Avoid narrow foundations and small side yards.
Light, Soil, and Water
Plant in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Water deeply during establishment. Mature plants tolerate short dry periods but need irrigation during prolonged drought for dense growth.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Plant from fall through spring. Prune after flowering or growth flushes and keep the hedge base wider than the top. Selective thinning improves airflow and reduces heavy outer growth.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
Flowers attract insects, and mature dense hedges provide shelter. Its main benefit is rapid evergreen screening rather than native habitat value.
Important Considerations
Sweet viburnum is not native to Florida. It becomes very large and requires significant pruning when planted too close together. Watch for thrips, scale, and root stress in wet beds. Review shrub care through UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
