Overview
Tropical hibiscus is a nonnative evergreen shrub grown for large showy flowers in red, pink, orange, yellow, and blended colors. It supplies strong color in warm, protected Tampa landscapes.
Mature Size
Most landscape selections reach 6 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 8 feet wide. Dwarf cultivars stay smaller. Confirm the cultivar before choosing spacing.
Light and Water
Plant in full sun or light afternoon shade. Provide regular water while allowing the soil surface to begin drying between irrigation cycles. Drought reduces flowering.
Soil and Drainage
Use fertile, well-drained soil with organic matter. Poor drainage promotes root decline. Mulch helps protect shallow roots from heat and moisture swings.
Care
Prune after cold weather to remove damage and shape the plant. Watch for aphids, whiteflies, scale, and mites. Follow current Florida rules when choosing any pest treatment.
Landscape Uses
Use as a flowering hedge, pool-area accent, large container plant, or colorful backdrop. Place it where fallen flowers will not create a slip issue on walks.
Best Planting Time
Spring is safest after frost risk declines. Early fall also works in protected locations with dependable irrigation.
Tampa Notes
Temperatures near freezing damage leaves and tender stems. Shelter plants from north wind and avoid exposed cold pockets.
