Overview
Variegated Schefflera is a dense tropical shrub with glossy palmate leaves patterned in green and golden yellow. It supplies bright year-round foliage across a wide range of South Tampa light conditions.
Mature Size and Habit
Landscape plants commonly reach 4 to 8 feet tall and wide, though unpruned specimens can grow larger. Multiple stems create a rounded, easily shaped canopy.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it for hedges, foundation beds, privacy screens, borders, containers, and poolside color. Its coarse foliage works well beside finer grasses and compact flowering shrubs.
Sunlight
Full sun, partial sun, and bright shade are suitable after proper acclimation. Brighter light strengthens variegation, while sudden intense exposure can scorch shade-grown leaves.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Plant in well-drained soil and water consistently through establishment. Mature shrubs tolerate short dry periods, but chronic saturation promotes root decline.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Spring through early fall provides warm rooting conditions. Protected fall planting also works when irrigation continues during dry weather.
Pruning and Maintenance
Selective tip pruning produces density and controls height. Avoid repeatedly cutting every stem to the same level, and monitor for scale, mites, and mealybugs.
Wildlife Value
The plant offers limited nectar or fruit value in ordinary maintained landscapes. Dense evergreen foliage provides minor shelter for small birds and insects.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Heat and humidity are well tolerated. Frost can spot leaves and damage tender stems, so protected urban locations perform best.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Plant tissue contains irritating calcium oxalate compounds and should not be eaten by people or pets. Sap can irritate skin. Roots are manageable, but allow room for the broad canopy.
Invasive Concerns
Dwarf schefflera is nonnative and has shown invasive behavior in parts of Florida. Keep fruiting plants out of natural-area edges and remove volunteers promptly.
