Overview

Walter's viburnum is a versatile Florida native evergreen shrub or small tree. It produces small white flowers in late winter and spring, followed by fruit used by wildlife. Size varies by selection, from compact forms near 3 feet to upright plants exceeding 15 feet.

Where to Use It

Use compact selections for foundations and low hedges. Use larger forms for screening, small trees, habitat gardens, or natural buffers. Its fine texture responds well to selective pruning and suits formal or natural landscapes.

Light, Soil, and Water

Plant in full sun to partial shade. It accepts sandy and moist soils, though performance improves when roots receive drainage and organic matter. Water during the first growing season. Established plants handle moderate drought and periodic wet conditions.

Planting and Care

Plant during fall through early spring for low-stress establishment. Prune after flowering when needed. Confirm the mature size of the selected cultivar before installation. This prevents over-pruning and protects the plant's natural form.

Important Considerations

Different cultivars have very different heights and growth habits. Specify the cultivar on landscape plans and nursery orders. UF/IFAS lists Walter's viburnum among dependable Central Florida natives in its native plant guidance.
